How to use crushed stones of different sizes

Using crushers, we can break stones into different sizes for different jobs. Each size of crushed stone has its own use.

Here are the common sizes and what they’re used for:

  • Stone dust – Great for making concrete blocks, filling gaps in walls, patching holes, and creating smooth pavements.
  • Up to 1/4″ – Used in barns, horse stables, tennis courts, walkways, and for filling the ground.
  • Up to 1/2″ – Mixed into asphalt and concrete for roads, water tanks, landscaping, and other environmental projects.
  • Up to 3/4″ – Ideal for pipe bedding, drainage, driveways, farm roads, French drains, path filling, and as a base for slabs.
  • Up to 1″ – Best for pavements, road foundations, and jogging tracks.
  • Up to 1 1/4″ – Used as a strong base for driveways, rough areas, and temporary paths for heavy trucks on construction sites.
  • Up to 2″ – Suitable for drainage systems, dry wells, septic systems, and under railroad tracks.
  • Up to 4″ – Used in areas where water drains out, heavy-duty roads, septic tanks, and on slopes.

How Much Stone Do You Need?

Find out how much stone or crushed stone you need for your project. Just enter the size of the area using length, width, and depth or provide the total area or volume. We’ll estimate the amount you need in cubic yards and tons.

How to Manually Calculate Crushed Stone Needed

If you want to figure out how much crushed stone or gravel you need for a project like a patio, driveway, or garden bed, you can do the math yourself using some simple formulas.

For Square or Rectangular Areas

Use this formula:

S = (L × W × D) / 27

Where:

  • S = Amount of crushed stone in cubic yards
  • L = Length of the area in feet
  • W = Width of the area in feet
  • D = Depth of the stone in feet
  • 27 = Number of cubic feet in one cubic yard

For Circular or Elliptical Areas

Use this formula:

S = (π × (L / 2) × (W / 2) × D) / 27

Where:

  • π (pi) = 3.1416 (a math constant)
  • L = Total diameter (length)
  • W = Total diameter (width)
  • D = Depth in feet
  • Divide by 27 to convert to cubic yards

Add Waste Factor (Extra Material)

To avoid running short, it’s a good idea to add 10% extra for waste, spillage, or settling:

ST = S + (S / 10)
This gives you the total amount needed with the waste factor included.

Example: Patio Project

Let’s say you’re building a patio that’s 15 feet long, 11 feet wide, and you want the stone to be 2 inches deep.

Step 1: Convert inches to feet
2 inches = 0.167 feet

Step 2: Plug into the formula
S = (15 × 11 × 0.167) / 27 = 1.02 cubic yards

Step 3: Add 10% for waste
ST = 1.02 + (1.02 / 10) = 1.12 cubic yards

Step 4: Convert to tons (if needed)
Multiply by 1.5 to estimate the weight in tons:
1.12 × 1.5 = 1.7 tons

Tips for Buying Crushed Stone

  • Always round up. It’s better to have a little extra than not enough.
  • Consider delivery. Crushed stone is heavy—most people have it delivered.
  • Choose the right size. Different sizes work best for different jobs (walkways, drainage, driveways, etc.).
  • Use a calculator. It saves time and reduces mistakes.
